The strangest thing happened after Potions class today. Professor Slughorn called Ora and me up to his desk at the end of class, just as everyone was filing out. He told us he had a shipment of potions ingredients coming in, but because of all the restrictions with the school and the security measures it had to be picked up at the post office in Hogsmeade. He said he didn't have the time to do it himself, but that Ora and I were good students and would we mind running down to town on Friday and picking the ingredients up for him. He said we'd be given special permission from him and that it wouldn't be a problem at all, and that he'd inform Filch not to give us any trouble.

Well, of course we agreed! I can't believe our luck - I'm going to owl the twins right away and see if they can meet us there - it's not as though there'll be a time limit, and I'm sure we can stay in town for a bit and talk, though we shouldn't stay too long or Filch might get suspicious. Maybe we can meet at the Hog's Head - I hear that's the place to go if you don't want to be noticed or overheard. Then if there's anything they need to know from Malfoy, we'll be able to pass that information along without fear of the post being intercepted.

I suppose another 'love letter' is in order, then. Off to find my red ink.

[OOC: I hope I got the dates right, Skuld? I believe it was supposed to be this week.]

Where: Hogwarts grounds near the Forbidden Forest
What: In which a Healer and a Priestess team up to save a First Year and his pet from the clutches of Filch and the Carrows

Lysienne looked up at the purple and orange hues of sunset, then laughed as Rolan gamboled around her like a puppy, feeling as if she had not done so for a long time. There hadn't been much to laugh about, lately. But it was good to get out of the castle, even if it was just for an evening walk. A large majestic shadow passed overhead, and she tilted her head, thinking that it somehow looked familiar. "What a beautiful bird," she murmured, wishing for a moment that she could shed all the thoughts weighing down on her and soar like that bird into the cool autumn sky.

But she had promised Madam Pomfrey that she would help that evening--students kept coming in with injuries, and the Mediwitch was exhausting herself treating them all--she sighed and turned, and saw a figure walking in her direction. Another student out for a walk? She was debating whether or not to take the long way back to the castle to avoid having to talk to anyone when a voice quite near her cried, "Sparky!" She whirled to see a First Year running in and out of the shadows of the Forbidden Forest, eyes trained on the ground. "Sparky!" he called again desperately.

She went up to him. "What's wrong?" she asked.

The other student turned a tear-streaked face to her. "Sparky! She's gone! She ran in there, and I'm scared!"

"Sparky? Who is she?"

"She's my pet mongoose," he sobbed. "She ran in front of Professor Carrow earlier, and he cast something on her, and...and I think she's hurt!"

"Don't worry, I'll help you find her. Rolan--" she started to say, when she saw Filch coming out of the castle for his nightly inspection of the grounds. She drew them both instinctively behind a tree, cursing inwardly. If he caught them, they would both get detention for going into the Forbidden Forest. She peered again in his direction, and saw his cat suddenly take off running. She bit her lip. "Rolan, can you find Sparky?" she whispered, and he disappeared quietly into the undergrowth. Now, what to do?

After sifting through all of almost two weeks of Snape's conversations in his office, I am convinced that he must be the most boring person in the universe.

All he talks about are the board meetings he has, the daily reports of the state of Hogwarts and its students, and making sure the accounts are in order. He's said nothing about the Carrows, nothing about the Dark Lord or serving him, and nothing even about which students or professors he might even slightly dislike. In short, there is no gossip happening at all in his office.

I wonder if 'budgets' is code for 'You-Know-Who.'
[identity profile] beater-serpens.livejournal.com
... Well, at least Quidditch practice has been going pretty normally. I guess that's a good start, right? The term has been nothing if not disorienting this year, with so many changes - and so many ways that are so very tempting to step out of line. I swear, it gets harder and harder to sit in Muggle Studies every day. And Dark Arts... I don't know what to think. On the one hand, it's atrocious. On the other hand... I feel like at least we're getting a little glimpse into something we may need to know, someday. I don't know, it's still very disconcerting.

I'm gong to Owl Fred and George after this, and let them know that Malfoy will help pass on information about You-Know-Who and the Death Eaters if he can. I'll try to word it so that anyone intercepting the letter won't be able to tell. It might be interesting to see if I can word it like a raunchy love letter, don't you think? Now I think I should try. God knows I need something to make me laugh, they probably do too. Though I suppose I have the advantage of hanging out with everyone in the Chamber. That really makes life much more bearable, most days.

Speaking of, Ora and I met a new student, Kahvi, just outside the entrance - she was talking to Gilbert and Serge, though they don't seem to have told her anything about the Chamber. She's really very interesting - from Tarikha! That sounds so exotic! It sounds like the wizarding and Muggle communities are much more closely intertwined where she comes from, and she's really interested in Physics. And she seems to like Pansy Parkinson about as much as we do. She seems all right. Maybe we should try talking to her more often, it's got to be hard to be new in a place like this right now.

So I had a talk with Draco and...

He's told me he's willing to pass information onto the Order and anyone else who needs it. He knows the names of most of the Death Eaters and all the ones in You-Know-Who's inner circle. He probably also knows all the Death Eater meeting places and safe havens as well, and might be in on some of You-Know-Who's plans for the near future, though that last bit is just speculation on my bit.

Alison, can you ask the Fred and George to ask the Order what information they need, and I'll ask Draco. And if anyone else has ideas with what to do with Draco knows, we might want to get on that.

Oh, and DON'T TELL ANYONE.

It works! We're all brilliant!

The Extendable Ear we planted in Snape's office is picking up all conversation in his office. The drawbacks so far is that we can't tell except from context who Snape is speaking to, and we also don't have a way to record the times corresponding to Snape's converations, but we can always try to improve on those later.

In the end, it works! I hope all the charms we've put on it will stay for the next little while. In the meantime, the conversation so far in Snape's office has been very minimal and boring. All he's done for the past couple of days is fill out school paperwork for the Ministry and approve the exam schedules for NEWTs and OWLs. I was hoping he would say exactly what was on those exams, but...nothing.

Well, if Snape starts plotting things with the Carrows in his office, now we'll know about it, and hopefully not too late.

Do you remember that old Potions book I showed you on the train? There was an original potion in there called "Apollo's Philter", which protects against poisons, infections, and illnesses for the space of a year. I think I was able to make it, and I've left it in the Chamber of Snogs. But I can't figure out how to get some to everyone. I think I have enough for everyone in the castle, and maybe some extra as well (just a taste is enough for it to take effect). Does anyone have any ideas?

Well, it's done. Ora and I managed to sneak out last night and plant the Extendable Ear inside Professor Snape's office, right inside the chimney. The only real hitch we ran into was he was still in his office when we first arrived, and it must've been nearly 3:30 in the morning! I don't know if being Headmaster kept him up so late, or if he was plotting something else, but hopefully with the Extendable Ear we'll be able to start figuring that out.

Ora is quite the acrobat, I don't know if I could've wedged myself into the chimney and climbed all the way down and up again without falling, like she did. It was pretty amazing. We'll still have to fly back up to the roof every once in a while to check on the journal we placed there, but at least that won't take nearly as long - or be quite as risky! Though getting from the dungeons all the way to the Quidditch Pitch in the middle of the night may not be easy, if we're doing it once or twice a week. I suppose we'll have to hope for the best. I wonder if learning some advanced invisibility charms might be worth the trouble...

In any case, thanks, Ora, for prodding me awake in Dark Arts this afternoon. I kept nearly nodding off, but she kept me awake. I'd definitely rather have a sore side than end up in "detention" with Professor Carrow! I'd rather not find out for myself if real Unforgivable Curses are involved or not, thanks. I'm already close enough to getting one in Muggle Studies - I swear, whatever that woman is teaching, it's utterly outrageous. I've had to nearly bite my lip through more than once to keep from insulting her into next Tuesday. Muggles are like mangy animals my foot. Do we have to put up with an entire year of this? What if some of the younger pureblood students start believing her?

The trip into the kitchen to talk to the house-elves was nothing like what I had expected—though truth to tell, I had no idea what to expect. I had never seen house-elves before coming to Hogwarts, and never really talked to one. Still, I'm sure we'll need all the help we can get this year, so I was determined to give it my best shot.

Rolan and I went down right after dinner.  )

So that was my rather odd evening. Though a successful one, I hope, if Dobby and the other house-elves are willing to help us...

Ora waited for all the tossing and turning to stop in the beds around her. She waited until she heard the common room go quiet, and then waited for hours after that, as she watched the candles burn low and sputter, and the time crawl slowly by. She rehearsed in her head every step they had set out to do, her mind combing the details of every action, making sure they had a plan if something were to go horribly awry.

She heard Alison shift in her bed, and decided it was time. Ora parted the curtains of her bed and stepped out slowly. She was wearing loose fitting clothing and soft-soled shoes, bewitched to move without sound and reflect very little light, so that in the darkness of the dormitory room she almost looked like a disembodied head. Alison was dressed likewise, her long blonde hair floating in the darkness as they paused for a second, making sure no one else in the room was awake. Ora pointed to the door and Alison nodded.

They made their way out of the Slytherin Dungeons, careful not to make any noise or wake any of the portraits as they slinked along the walls of the Hogwarts corridors, making their way to the locker rooms and the Quidditch Pitch, where their brooms were stowed. Ora breathed a quiet sigh of relief as Alison tossed her a broom. The first step of their plan had gone without a hitch.

Gred and Forge,

Well, we've all survived our first week, though I suppose even the Prophet would've printed something, had Hogwarts exploded or imploded by now. Slughorn's been an all right Head of House so far, and Snape hasn't done overly much as Headmaster, but the Carrows are pretty awful, as predicted. I think I might actually try to behave in their classes, because I'm not entirely sure they'd punish infractions using the usual avenues. (Don't worry, I won't behave
too much.)

Thankfully, it looks like there
will be Quidditch this year - I guess I should be thankful, at least, though somehow it still feels like another cover-up by the Ministry. What are things really like, by the way? I still get the Prophet, but it's hard to tell whether anything they print is really true, these days. You guys are going to have to be my source of real information, because it's sure as hell not going to be the paper.

But regardless, I'm Quidditch captain! I know, who would've thought? But Malfoy's in no shape to do it, and Professor Slughorn seems to like me enough. I don't think we'll have to hold tryouts this year - besides, what would that prove? It's not as though anyone better is going to show up - none of the first-years seem particularly proficient at anything other than boasting, and between Vaisey and Pritchard we've got at least one Chaser with a brain. Though if anyone decides to be particularly blockheaded, I'm not going to hesitate to replace them. I think I'm going to put Crabbe as Keeper this year, because it's either him or Goyle as the other Beater and I don't trust Crabbe not to whack a Bludger at me. Goyle's stupid enough that he probably won't think of it, I hope. And no offense to Ginny, but if she's the best Gryffindor's got, they don't stand a chance this year. I don't think Ravenclaw will be much trouble, so I suppose it's Hufflepuff I'll have to keep a watch on. I don't plan on losing to them in my last year here!

Whichever one of you left the Fainting Fancy in my trunk (Fred), did you think I wouldn't recognize it? Or did you just assume that I was going to leave it for Pansy? (In which case I guess you'd be right - that girl needs to learn to look at what she's putting in her mouth, seriously, even if it is adressed to her from "Draco.")

Take care of yourselves - I expect all remaining limbs and extremeties to be intact next time I see you. I'm not sure yet about Hogsmeade trips, but even in the worst case it's not as though the cancellation of those would keep me from sneaking out. (What can I say, I've had excellent teachers when it comes to subterfuge.) Also, don't forget about the three extra boxes of Shield Hats in the closet - you know those tend to sell out fast nowadays.

When: the second week of classes
Where: The Chamber of Snogs
What: The girls plot to spy on their new Headmaster

Carefully, Ora padded down an abandoned corridor on the sixth floor of Hogwarts, looking around to make sure there were no other students in the vicinity. The sixth floor of the castle was usually strangely empty, most of the classes being on the lower floors and the greater parts of the rooms in this wing being abandoned, or having been, like most rooms at Hogwarts, shifted by the castle to some other part. The Chamber had been on the fourth floor their second year, before suddenly being moved to the sixth their fourth year, and it had taken almost of a week of prowling around Hogwarts after and between classes for them to find Gilbert and Serge again, who had giggled and snickered about how long it had taken.

Ora strode up to a wall lined with paintings that did not seem particular, and waved a hello to the boys. The darker-haired Serge was the first to notice that Ora was standing there, and he spared a glance for her before seeming to whisper something to Gilbert that made them stop mid-Snog.

"Everybody's here already," Gilbert said lazily, waving a lazy greeting at Ora before wrapping his arms around Serge's neck again. He raised an eyebrow. "You four seem to be spending more time here than usual."

Ora shrugged. "Well, with things going on the way they are this year..." she trailed off, figuring it best to leave it at that.

"Ah," Serge nodded knowingly, "I've heard rumors, bits and pieces, about the new Headmaster and the new teachers." He kissed Gilbert loving on the nose before diving back in. "Small wonder," he said, as the door swung open.

Ora entered and the door swung closed behind her, once more melting seamlessly into the walls. The other girls had various textbooks and parchments open and spread out on the floor, looking up as Ora entered.

"Sorry I'm late," Ora grinned, finding her favorite couch and plopping herself on it, dumping her schoolbag at her feet. "I think I've figured out how we're going to get those Extendable Ears in Snape's office," she said as the girls look at her and carefully set down their homework. They all seemed to be listening, so Ora launched into her idea.

"We're going to need the following things," Ora started, counting on her fingers. "A tightly controlled Reductor or Deprimo, a good enough Reparo to fix it, a good silencing charm, a quill charmed to write down everything it hears, an infinite journal (like ours), a few brooms, a good Disillusionment Charm, a perfect Sticking Charm, a good Disillusionment Charm, and probably a few brooms." Ora paused to take a breath. "In short, we are going to make a whole in the roof of Snape's office, lower down an Extendable Ear, fix the hole, leave the other end on the roof where a quill and a journal will be recording everything that's happening in there. We'll need to affix the other end of the Extendable Ear and the journal to the roof, make sure no one can see them, and make sure they won't get rained on or blown off the top of the castle.

"There," Ora said proudly, taking a big breath. It had taken her nearly all week to try and tackle the particular problem of spying on her new Headmaster. "It's that simple."

I had a chat with Professor Slughorn in his office today, before the start of my classes. It was a pleasant chat, I suppose, if such things can be called pleasant.

He got right to the point after inquiring about my summer, which I appreciated. )

Forgive me—I don't know why, but I have never been able to like Professor Slughorn, and perhaps that is why I did not try very hard to persuade him. He is not cruel, like Professor Snape could sometimes be, and yet...I shudder to have to ask anything of him, as if he might sink little invisible hooks into my soul and one day pull me gasping and flailing into his net. That sounds melodramatic even to me, but... Well, I'm grateful to him for the use of the room, at least, and hope that I shall not have to contradict myself one day and beg him for use of his Potions ingredients.

Sorry to spam all your friends lists with yet another Snogs posts (I think it can be certifiably said that Alison and I have no lives), but we have been sitting around all night doing some planning for the rest of the year.

THE CALENDAR )

In addition, if you need to refer to the location of classrooms inside Hogwarts, please refer to this page. There is also a Map of the Hogwarts Grounds available at HP Lexicon.

Just so we all know, the Chamber of Snogs is found on the sixth floor of Hogwarts, along a quiet corridor filled with various paintings. The painting of Gilbert and Serge is hanging on the wall in the middle of the corridor. The door is charmed to look like part of the wall, and only swings inside if people are granted entrance by Gilbert and Serge.

None of the Gryffindors slept last night. The apprehension and dread were so thick in the air that you could almost taste them, sour and metallic, in the back of your throat. We all left our beds and drifted by ones and twos down into the common room where we sat together and talked in hushed voices about Professor Snape as Headmaster of Hogwarts and the class that is no longer called Defense Against the Dark Arts.

"I'm going to drop out of the class," Romilda whispered, and immediately there was a murmur of agreement.

"No!" Neville stood up, and everyone stared at him in surprise. "Do you call yourselves Gryffindors? This is when we have to stand strong! We need to know how they're going to fight, and we need to know how to fight back! It may be called the Dark Arts now, but we can still decide for ourselves what to take away from it!"

"That's what Harry would do," Ginny agreed quietly.

"Yeah, but he isn't here, is he?" Jimmy shouted. "None of the Golden Trio are--they're all hiding who-knows-where."

"No, they're not!" Ginny retorted fiercely. "How could you say that when you have no idea what sort of danger they're in?"

"Yeah, and I suppose--"

"Stop it!" Seamus cut him off. "Neville's right, we have to stand strong as a House! How are we gonna get through this if we're already tearing each other apart?"

Everyone fell silent until Neville said determinedly, "Harry's out looking for a way to defeat You-Know-Who--I know he is. We're his House, and we've gotta have faith in him. And there's lots we can do from right here, right?"

People nodded, but many of them half-heartedly. Neville clutched his fists, and I could see something gold glinting from between one of them. Ginny exchanged glances with Seamus, and I wondered if they were thinking was I was thinking--was Neville planning to start up the DA again? And how many people would join if he did?

Just a quick note, since this is the easiest way to reach everyone at once. :D;

Regarding the log we just started, taking place on Platform 9 3/4, I was wondering what the best way to do this log was. I was thinking of having people starting off with private conversations between just two characters just reply to each other through comments (i.e., Alison replies to Ora's comments, etc.), until we all meet up and at that point start a new comment thread to the post below the previous conversations. In the meantime, people can track all replies to the post with LJ's nifty track feature, so we'll all be on the same page? I know as non-paid members you're only allowed to track so many posts at once, but we can always un-track it when it's done?

I just figured I'd put this out there, before I started replying to comments~ Thoughts?
