[MOD] Jailbreaking Azkaban (reference post)

Hi guys, I'm done with my orals, back from Dragon*Con, and now it's time to kickstart the Jailbreaking Azkaban post!



Here's what's going down:
- First, please post up to your character arriving at the Burrow (with the exception of Alison, who will be there already and answering the door.)
- Then I will take over again, as Molly and Arthur Weasley, who are spearheading this operation, explain to us what we need to know of the plan:

Once the prisoners are broken out of Azkaban, they will be ushered in groups of ~10 to various portkey waystations, with the ultimate destination unknown to us. We, along with several of the other younger participants (like the Twins) will be responsible for guarding three portkeys, as part of the waystation jumps. We will not know where our portkeys are going or where the groups have come from previously. Unlike regular portkeys which are touch or time activated, a clever member of the Resistance has created a variant of the Portus spell which allows a portkey to be passphrase or spell activated. There will be 2 Order members sheparding the escapees.

Depending on whether heartswill is playing, we'll either have two groups or just one group of girls guarding the portkeys.

The girls don't get to know the details of the plan (only the Order members are privy to that!), but they do get to see every Order member who will be part of the raiding party:

Arthur Weasley

3 animagi (Pryde, Toynbee, McCoy)

The waystations will be in out of the way places across Britain, such as abandoned warehouses, middle-of-nowhere moors, for sale muggle residences in quiet suburbs, and the like. Once all 3 groups have been through, we're to Apparate back to the Burrow, and report.

Oh! Also... I think Ron is around? He was back home for the holidays after he left Harry and Hermione, right? If that's the case, we should include him as well.

Was he back for the holidays? Oh yes, he was! Because when Harry and Hermione got attacked by Nagini around Christmas-time, he wasn't there. I guess that means that we'll get some story of Harry's whereabouts out of Ron? (Or at least second-hand out of the Twins.)

I like the idea that we sit Ron down and grill him on what's going on, though I imagine he won't be too forthcoming about what Harry's mission actually is, only that last he saw them, they were safe. ¬_¬ I can't see Ron trusting us with more than that, cause, well, we are Slytherins after all and he's never liked us much. :/

I can imagine that Ron's even more bitter about us when he finds out that both his twin brothers are going out with you and think you're pretty swell. :D He definitely doesn't like us, but at least he knows for sure which side we're on. ¬_¬

XD I have this feeling that Ron and I love to hate on each other... but in a somewhat good-natured way? Maybe? XD; I think he's thick, he thinks I'm insane, something like that~ But I suppose we'll get along as adults. And regardless, he definitely has to start getting the idea we're on the same side, yes.

I'm not so much sure if it's a good-natured type of hating on as Ron just stubbornly holding onto his grudge against us Slytherins. I'm sure he'll make exception for us eventually, though I can still picture him about to explode when he finds out in about 20-some-odd years that Alby's dating Scorp. :p

Well, there's definitely some of that. Ron is indeed pretty thick sometimes. But we will get along eventually, he's not too stupid to change! Hermione will help. Though yeah, I think he would definitely explode when he hears about Alby and Scorp. Poor Ron. XD Life is so hard.

I'm sure that eventually Ron will think you're not too bad, and you'll finally be able to get along at Weasley family gatherings over the holidays. I'm sure Hermione will be a big part of that. Or at least smacking him or something when he's out of line.

I'm kind of curious how Ron ends up finding out that Alby and Scorp are going out. Christmas dinner table? :D Rose mentioning it offhand? Ron and Harry hanging out? (And would it be too much to ask for you to write that scene? XD)

I... have no idea how he'd find out. Probably at some family gathering, though. Man, that would be pretty hilarious~ (XD If I can come up with a good way for him to find out, I could be persuaded to do that~ ;D)

(I like the idea that somebody drops it at the dinner table [Somebody asking Harry or Ginny how it was having the Malfoys over for dinner and then mentioning Alby and his boyfriend something like that?] by accident during the Christmas Giant Weasley Family Get-Together or something like that, and it turns out to be one of those "everybody's been keeping this secret from Ron" kind of deals and Ron gets extra pissed that not only is his nephew gay, he's camping it up with Draco Malfoy's son and nobody wanted to tell him.

Hilarity ensues? Or maybe just awkwardness and drama.)

(Oh God, yes. XD Everyone will have been keeping it from Ron, and it'll get out and... it'll be beautiful. Really. I will definitely try to write this, sometime. Of course, there are a helluva lot of characters involved, dear God. XD)

I am all for giant dinner table or sitting room conversations with Ron choking on his food. :D Not all of the characters really have to participate explicitly (they can just be mentioned as being around?), but that's what you get for having such a huge family! (The Malfoy family is pathetically small by comparison. D: Poor Scorp doesn't even have any cousins because both Ora and Draco are only children.)

When they get off the Hogwarts Express after their fifth year, Alby should totally drag Scorp around and introduce him to all his aunts and uncles. XD I would love to see (imagine?) the expression on Ron's face as Scorpius shakes his hand and introduces himself cordially. XD

Pushing Ron's buttons is just way too fun to pass up. :D

XD Yeah, huge families just make for more people you have to throw into the conversation.. but at least not everyone needs to be talking at once. Ahh, Weasleys. XD They're seriously going to repopulate the world someday.

Ahaha, that would be fantastic. XD I'm not sure who I'd feel sorrier for, Scorp or Ron!

But you do have a point there. It's just so fun to make fun of Ron~

Hey, just so I can keep my story straight, which one of you two would be the one that owled the invitation? I'm guessing Alison, since this is being billed to our parents as a sleepover at her place (her being the only one who actually lives in Britain), but I just wanted to double-check... Our parents aren't supposed to know we communicate by enchanted journal, right? Just keeping my bases covered...

It'll be Alison who probably owls you the invite. :D And Ora actually lives in London too, but since Alison is more in touch with the Order through the Twins, she'll be sending out your invite anyway. And nobody except us knows how we manage to communicate. :3

Eeeeh... okay, I'm waffling on something. I've been debating for a while whether or not I want to actually make something of the random guy Seth that I'd conjured during the Hogsmeade trip to spook Kahvi into running into Pansy. He really was just kind of spur of the moment, but he might be growing on me.

Part of me wants to do it simply because it'd be warm and fuzzy (but I have other characters for that, actually). Part of me thinks I should pursue it and then kill him off for extra tragedy and misplaced guilt (why do I always write angsty and sad?) or reveal him as a Death Eater for serious conflict of values drama (but I don't think I could give him a good reason to be a Death Eater... he already strikes me as too friendly and not terribly ambitious). Last part of me wants to just keep Kahvi out of relationships. What do you guys think?

I think the main problem with introducing him as an interest is that he's not a student. If I'm going to kill him off, he could be one of the redshirts here (not that this gives any time for development). I don't know if I have a good reason for her to meet him again. Bah.

So yeah... um... suggestions appreciated ^^;;

Since you've gone through all the trouble of conjuring him up as a character, I think that killing him off here would be waaaay too premature. :D

As for either putting him in the order or as a Death Eater, it's up to you. I think something really interesting could be done with characters who aren't really Voldemort sympathizers in the first place, but kind of go along with the flow either to protect their own families, or because that's the most convenient choice at the time. I think there's always this sort of simmering discontentment that the Wizarding world holds againt the Muggle world, and Voldemort stirring that up and mixing it in with statements that Muggles are inferior as an excuse for genocide. It's something very real that we've seen in history time and time again.

If you want to go there, I think that's something very interesting to explore, and I'm all for you doing it since you seem to be set up for rather well. :D And you know, I'm all for the angst and the sad, or at least serious conflict/values drama. It's wartime, and I was seriously disappointed in JKR for not touching on a lot more of those themes, because they certain were a hell of a lot more relevant and interesting, than Harry's whinging as he froze his ass off in his tent Apparating between random places in the English countryside.

Hmn, that is certainly a thought. And you're right, there probably is a lot of discontentment within the Wizarding world. I mean, why should they have to hide from Muggles? And what's all this crazy technology stuff? That would be a pretty serious clash with Kahvi, who's grown up amongst the Muggles in a considerably more tolerant environment.

I'll have to mull that over and see if I can come up with a reasonable reason for him to have gone along with the whole Death Eater thing. But if he is, in fact, a Death Eater, I'm probably not going to bring him up here, since it would make more sense to actually build some sort of rapport between him and Kahvi before introducing trouble... although I still don't know how they'll end up running into each other again.

There is huge discontentment with the Wizarding world, I am sure. I'm sure that a good load of Wizards at least question why it is that they're the ones who have to hide, and why they can't do the same thing to the Muggles that Muggles did to them during the witch hunts. I'm sure there is still bitterness lingering from that, and that's certainly something that I am under the impression Voldemort's followers have capitalized on in order to maintain control of the Ministry and the general citizenry.

Kahvi is really in an interesting position as a pureblood who's grown up well integrated with both the Muggle and Wizarding worlds, and I really think this ought to be explored at least a little bit because she is in such an interesting position. :D If Seth really is going to be a Death Eater, I'm not entirely sure how often Kahvi can run into him, but I was under the impression that there might have been Death Eaters doing patrols at Hogwarts (along with the Dementors), and there's always the opportunity during Hogsmeade trips.

You can also retcon some instances earlier during the winter holidays when she runs into him in London?

Hmn, yeah, after thinking and talking it out a little, I think this might be too early to be including Seth, so he probably won't appear. Or if he does, he'll be hooded, and Kahvi won't recognize him (briefly thought about letting him know she's on the other side, but I still likely won't). I just need to start figuring out where I can have him run into her, since I didn't leave many likely gaps for her to be meeting people outside of school. Hopefully there will be some opportunities in the future ^^;;

But hey, why not, it'll probably be good for me to beat my head over how to make him a convincing Death Eater without making him an evil jerk...

I warn that I'm not very good at writing people falling in love, though, so I tips, pointers, suggestions appreciated etc. -_- Bwuh.

There's a question of whether you want to make him a fully-fledged Death Eater, or simply a sympathizer or accomplice. I get the impression that there may be a lot of people who are sympathetic to the Voldemort administration, but are not fully committed to the cause. (The parents of Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson, Daphne Greengrass, and Millicent Bulstrode are never mentioned in Rowling canon as Death Eaters, so my impression is that they may share some of the same ideals, but are not actually Death Eaters. I get the impression that during every major political upheaval, there are just people who want to be left alone and live their lives the best they can, which I think applies to them.) Rowling also mentions that those recruited to be Snatchers are not full Death Eaters (maybe they're just trying to contribute or work their way up the ranks), so if you want to tread lightly, you can also go the Snatcher route. This would probably make it more likely for Kahvi to run into him during Hogsmeade trips or something like that. :D

The Snatcher route will solve a lot of your "but what if he's an evil jerk" sort of problems. I can imagine that a lot of people might have initially joined the Snatchers just so they, in turn, wouldn't be bothered by them in the future. :3 Going that route will also allow for a more sympathetic portrayal of the character.

...and if you've read anything I've done with Ora and Draco, you'll realize that I SUCK at writing people falling in love too, so... ¬_¬ I'm really not the best person to ask. XD I think there may in fact be "no good way" and that we should just go with what we've got, and if it sucks, it sucks, who cares, nobody else is ever going to read it. :D

Well, after fighting with him for a few days/nights now, I get the feeling he is a Death Eater, but something on the lower ranks (ie not one of the important circle). One of the "eyes and ears" so to speak, because it's something he's good at, it's a job, and those freaking Muggles have never done anything for him anyway and they're probably getting what's coming to them :/ Curse you, Seth! >:[ I think he likes being mysterious on purpose, the bastard... And I'm a sucker for punishment, since I'm going to try the hard route >_< Bah.

Ahaha, I thought you were doing pretty well with Ora and Draco, actually. You capture the inexplicable nature of falling in love fairly well--neither of them particularly wants to be in love with the other, because it just causes them trouble, but they're continually drawn together in this spiral. Like being strangled by Devil's Ivy, I suppose, since it just gets a better hold on them the more they struggle XD

Aw, thanks. D: I really thought it was kind of MADE OF FAIL, but then again I realize there's not a love story I've ever read that didn't seem hokey in some sort of way. ~<3 Good luck with your stuff, and hopefully I'll get my next Snogs post up tonight. :D
