[Thirteen] Do Our Part

Holidays have been going all right I suppose; I can't remember the weather having ever been this terrible, even at this time of year, but the weathermen on the telly are all blaming global warming and air pollution and anything else they can think of. I suppose they need something to blame, after all. Dad was pretty worried about how things were going at school, but I think I managed to convince him that everything's been all right, even though it's not. My aunt and uncle gave me a wizard's wireless and I've been trying to keep up with the news, but it's awfully depressing most of the time.

But the most important thing is this: Fred and George owled me this morning. They said there was something important they wanted to discuss, and since Dad was out for the afternoon (he always gets restless when the university's not in session, and it's not as though he ever really stops working for long anyway) they apparated over to talk. There's going to be a raid on Azkaban, to break out all of the muggles and suspected "traitors" the Death Eaters are holding there. The Order sounds like they can use all the help they can get - they wouldn't let anyone our age near the actual prison of course, but there are going to be a number of Portkey waystations to get prisoners out in groups as fast as possible, and they'll let us help with those.

So I'm going to help man one of the waystations. If any of you can get away to help, I know the Order would be grateful. It should be pretty safe - we'd just be rounding up people and making sure they get on their way, kind of like traffic control. We'll be out of the line of fire, and the Death Eaters won't know where they waystations are.

The twins said we could all meet at the Burrow the day of the raid, so if your parents need to know where you're going you can tell them where to check in. Don't talk about this to anyone you don't have to - the fewer people who know, the less chance there is that the Death Eaters could find out.

It'll be tough, but I think I can talk my parents into letting me have a sleepover at your place! Then we can head over the Burrow together. If you need help manning the waystation, I wouldn't mind. (Though I guess if you're watching it with Fred and George, maybe they need help at another one?)

And I know this is dangerous and probably ill-advised, but ask Fred and George if there's anything the Order needs to know about Azkaban that they don't. Draco may also be able to warn us if the plan gets leaked to them somehow.

Really? That would be great! Fred and George sounded like they were thinking of actually going in to Azkaban to help, which I don't think is a great idea but I guess they're adults and we're not... so maybe you and I could man the waystation together. The more people guarding the portkeys, the better.

Oh - I hadn't even thought of that! I'll ask them straight away. I'm sure if he can find out anything at all, it would be helpful, even if it's only how many guards are at the doors, or something.

I don't mean to be off-putting, but I think maybe I'm a little confused--you are planning to be involved in an Azkaban break-in? That, in and of itself, seems rather outlandish a proposal. And are you sure your comrades are capable of pulling this fantastic a stunt off? I would be remiss not to point out the apparent lack of wisdom of this course of action... Are we even qualified for such a task? Especially if something should go wrong? Please tell me that this plan has been thought through.

There's a chance I'll be able to get away for an evening, but I will probably require an owl before I can bring it up with them. My family will notice if I do not receive obvious communications from someone pertaining to the sleepover cover story...

We're not really participating directly, exactly... I suppose you could say we're just helping with the getaway. I'm fairly sure they're up to the task - they've pulled off a fair amount of risky stunts before. This needs to be done. There are too many innocent people in there not to try.

If you do want to help us, I'm sure you could sleep over at the Burrow. I was going to stay there myself, and there's always room for one more. It's up to you.
